The date on the bond is the wrong date to track

Every other compliance document you hold expires on a date you control. A surety bond does not. It is a three-party instrument — you (the principal), the agency that requires it (the obligee) and the surety — and the surety can end it by giving written notice to the obligee. That notice starts a clock at the regulator, not with you. By the time the letter reaches your office the agency has already been told.

Which means the deadline that matters is not the expiry printed on the bond. It is the point at which the surety decides whether to keep writing you, and the point at which the renewal premium falls due.

The real timeline

StageWhenWhat is actually happening
Re-underwriting~90 days before term endThe surety pulls credit and financials again and prices the renewal. A changed credit picture, a new judgment or a bad year shows up here — which is the whole argument for finding out 90 days out rather than 9.
Renewal premium due~45 days before term endA continuous bond stays in force on payment. Non-payment is the single most common cause of a cancellation filing, and it is almost always an invoice sent to a stale address rather than a decision.
Cancellation notice periodSet by the bond form or the state statute, commonly 30 to 60 days. Read yours — this is the number that decides whether a missed invoice becomes a suspended licence.A surety cannot simply walk away. It cancels by written notice to the state contractor licensing board, and the obligee acts on that notice — the clock is running at the regulator before it is running with you.
Term endThe date on the bondPast this the licence or authority behind the bond is exposed.
ReinstatementAfter lapseGenerally not a late renewal but a new filing: new bond, new application, penalties, and a rate that reflects the lapse. Budget weeks, not days.

Continuous does not mean automatic

Most licence and permit bonds are written as continuous bonds: there is no fixed end date on the instrument, and it stays in force as long as the annual renewal premium is paid. Licensees hear "continuous" and stop tracking it. That is exactly backwards — a continuous bond has no expiry date to key a calendar reminder to, so the only trigger is an invoice, and an invoice is a piece of post that can go to the wrong address.

The failure is almost never a decision. It is a surety with a three-year-old billing address, an office manager who left, and an email filter that files anything with "invoice" in the subject line. The bond does not fail. The reminder does.

Re-underwriting is where the surprises live

Surety pricing is credit-driven. At renewal the carrier looks again — personal credit for a small principal, financial statements for a larger one — and the renewal quote reflects whatever has happened since. A judgment, a tax lien, a bad year, a claim paid on another bond: any of it can move the premium sharply or make the carrier decline to renew altogether. Finding that out 90 days before term end leaves time to shop the bond. Finding it out at 20 days leaves time to panic.

A lapse is not a late payment

This is the part licensees consistently underestimate. When a bond lapses, you are generally not paying a late fee and carrying on. You are:

That last point is the expensive one. In many states an unlicensed contractor cannot enforce a contract for work done while unlicensed; a lapsed dealer bond stops title work on cars already sold; a revoked broker authority means the loads on your board are not yours to move. The fine is rarely the story.

Build the calendar backwards

The version of this that works: take every bond you hold, write down the term end, and set the alert at 90 days rather than 30. Confirm the surety has your current billing address every year — a two-minute call that prevents most lapses. And put the bond dates on the same calendar as the licence dates they sit behind, because after the first renewal those two dates stop lining up and people track only one of them.

That is what BondWatch does across every licence, bond, insurance certificate and credential in one place. Start with the free renewal-deadline check, or read the renewal rules for your bond type and state.

Frequently asked

When should I start renewing a surety bond?
90 days before the term ends. That is when the surety re-underwrites and prices the renewal, which leaves time to shop the bond if the quote moves or the carrier declines.

Do continuous surety bonds renew automatically?
A continuous bond stays in force as long as the renewal premium is paid — but there is no expiry date on the instrument to trigger a reminder, so the only prompt is an invoice. A stale billing address is the most common cause of a lapse.

What happens when a surety bond lapses?
The obligee suspends or refuses to renew the licence the bond supports. Fixing it generally means filing a new bond and a reinstatement application, not paying a late fee, and the rate reflects the lapse.

BondWatch is a renewal-tracking tool, not a surety agency, an insurer, a licensed producer or a law firm. This page describes how surety bond renewal cycles work in general. Bond amounts, required forms, cancellation-notice periods and renewal windows are set by state statute and by the bond form itself and differ by jurisdiction — verify every requirement and every date against your bond, your surety and the agency that holds it before you rely on it.
