Surety bond renewal deadlines

Updated 2026-08-29 · 5 bond types × 51 jurisdictions

A surety bond is the only compliance document you hold that a third party can cancel out from under you. The surety files a notice with the agency, the agency acts on the notice, and the first you hear about it is a suspension letter. That is why bonds lapse far more often than licences do, and why the date to track is not the expiry — it is the 90-day mark where the surety reprices and the 45-day mark where the invoice falls due.

The five bond types most licensees hold

Contractor licence bond
general contractors, specialty and trade contractors, and in many states subcontractors and home-improvement contractors
Motor vehicle dealer bond
new and used vehicle dealers, wholesale dealers, and in many states auto auctions, brokers, salvage dealers, RV, motorcycle and trailer dealers
Freight broker bond (BMC-84)
property brokers and freight forwarders operating under FMCSA authority
Notary public bond
notaries public in the states that require a bond as a condition of commission — not every state does
Mortgage broker and lender bond
mortgage brokers, mortgage lenders and mortgage servicers, and in many states loan originators, money transmitters and consumer lenders on the same NMLS rails

What is uniform and what is not

Two things in this whole area are genuinely the same everywhere. The freight broker requirement is federal: $75,000 of financial security filed with FMCSA on a BMC-84 bond or BMC-85 trust under 49 U.S.C. 13906, with operating authority revoked 30 days after a surety files cancellation. And the NMLS licence renewal period runs November 1 to December 31 for every mortgage licensee in every state. Everything else — amounts, forms, notice periods, which licence categories need a bond at all — is state law, and we do not print state figures here because a wrong number in this area costs somebody a licence. Confirm with the agency holding your bond.

BondWatch is a renewal-tracking tool, not a surety agency, an insurer, a licensed producer or a law firm. This page describes how surety bond renewal cycles work in general. Bond amounts, required forms, cancellation-notice periods and renewal windows are set by state statute and by the bond form itself and differ by jurisdiction — verify every requirement and every date against your bond, your surety and the agency that holds it before you rely on it.
