Motor vehicle dealer bond renewal deadlines
Required of new and used vehicle dealers, wholesale dealers, and in many states auto auctions, brokers, salvage dealers, RV, motorcycle and trailer dealers. The bond guarantees that the dealer transfers clean title, discloses odometer readings honestly, pays the taxes and fees collected at the point of sale, and complies with the state motor vehicle code. Consumers and the state can claim against it; the dealer indemnifies the surety.

How the renewal runs
Dealer bonds are written on the dealer licence year, so bond expiry and licence expiry usually do move together — the trap here is different. Dealer licence renewal packets typically require proof of a current bond filed with the application, so the bond has to be renewed and the continuation certificate in hand before the licence paperwork is even submitted.
| Stage | When | What is actually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Re-underwriting | ~90 days before term end | The surety pulls credit and financials again and prices the renewal. A changed credit picture, a new judgment or a bad year shows up here — which is the whole argument for finding out 90 days out rather than 9. |
| Renewal premium due | ~45 days before term end | A continuous bond stays in force on payment. Non-payment is the single most common cause of a cancellation filing, and it is almost always an invoice sent to a stale address rather than a decision. |
| Cancellation notice period | Set by the bond form or the state statute, commonly 30 to 60 days. Read yours — this is the number that decides whether a missed invoice becomes a suspended licence. | A surety cannot simply walk away. It cancels by written notice to the state motor vehicle or dealer licensing agency, and the obligee acts on that notice — the clock is running at the regulator before it is running with you. |
| Term end | The date on the bond | Past this the licence or authority behind the bond is exposed. |
| Reinstatement | After lapse | Generally not a late renewal but a new filing: new bond, new application, penalties, and a rate that reflects the lapse. Budget weeks, not days. |
What a lapse costs
The dealer licence is suspended. That stops title and registration work before it stops sales, which means deals already written go unfunded and cars sit on the lot in a legal limbo the buyers did not agree to. Reinstatement generally requires a new bond and a fresh application rather than a late payment.
What varies by state
State statute sets the required bond amount, which dealer categories need which bond, and whether the state requires a separate bond per licensed location. The mechanics above come from the bond instrument and hold everywhere; the figures come from your state and we do not print them here, because a wrong number in this area costs somebody a licence. Confirm them with the state motor vehicle or dealer licensing agency and with the surety that wrote the bond.
