Contractor licence bond renewal deadlines
Required of general contractors, specialty and trade contractors, and in many states subcontractors and home-improvement contractors. The bond guarantees that the contractor performs the work in line with the state licensing statute and pays the subcontractors, suppliers and wage claims that statute makes the bond answerable for. It protects the public and the state, not the contractor — a paid claim is a debt the contractor owes the surety back.

How the renewal runs
Contractor licence bonds are usually written as continuous bonds that stay in force on payment of an annual renewal premium, sitting behind a licence that renews on its own cycle. After the first renewal the bond date and the licence date rarely line up again, which is why contractors who track only the licence date get caught.
| Stage | When | What is actually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Re-underwriting | ~90 days before term end | The surety pulls credit and financials again and prices the renewal. A changed credit picture, a new judgment or a bad year shows up here — which is the whole argument for finding out 90 days out rather than 9. |
| Renewal premium due | ~45 days before term end | A continuous bond stays in force on payment. Non-payment is the single most common cause of a cancellation filing, and it is almost always an invoice sent to a stale address rather than a decision. |
| Cancellation notice period | Set by the bond form or the state statute, commonly 30 to 60 days. Read yours — this is the number that decides whether a missed invoice becomes a suspended licence. | A surety cannot simply walk away. It cancels by written notice to the state contractor licensing board, and the obligee acts on that notice — the clock is running at the regulator before it is running with you. |
| Term end | The date on the bond | Past this the licence or authority behind the bond is exposed. |
| Reinstatement | After lapse | Generally not a late renewal but a new filing: new bond, new application, penalties, and a rate that reflects the lapse. Budget weeks, not days. |
What a lapse costs
The board suspends the licence. In most states an unlicensed contractor cannot enforce a contract for the work done while unlicensed, so a lapse does not just stop new jobs — it can put money already earned at risk, and it usually surfaces when a customer refuses to pay and their lawyer checks the licence history.
What varies by state
State statute sets the required bond amount, whether additional bonds (wage-and-welfare, LLC/qualifier, disciplinary) are layered on top, and the notice the surety must give before cancellation. The mechanics above come from the bond instrument and hold everywhere; the figures come from your state and we do not print them here, because a wrong number in this area costs somebody a licence. Confirm them with the state contractor licensing board and with the surety that wrote the bond.
