Notary public bond renewal deadlines
Required of notaries public in the states that require a bond as a condition of commission — not every state does. The bond guarantees the public against loss caused by the notary's misconduct or negligence in performing notarial acts. It is not errors-and-omissions cover for the notary; if the bond pays, the notary repays the surety personally.

How the renewal runs
Notary bonds are normally written coterminous with the commission rather than annually — the bond term matches the commission term exactly. That makes this the easiest renewal in this entire list to lose, because the reminder has to survive a multi-year gap and usually one change of employer, address and email in between.
| Stage | When | What is actually happening |
|---|---|---|
| Re-underwriting | ~90 days before term end | The surety pulls credit and financials again and prices the renewal. A changed credit picture, a new judgment or a bad year shows up here — which is the whole argument for finding out 90 days out rather than 9. |
| Renewal premium due | ~45 days before term end | A continuous bond stays in force on payment. Non-payment is the single most common cause of a cancellation filing, and it is almost always an invoice sent to a stale address rather than a decision. |
| Cancellation notice period | Set by the bond form or the state statute, commonly 30 to 60 days. Read yours — this is the number that decides whether a missed invoice becomes a suspended licence. | A surety cannot simply walk away. It cancels by written notice to the state commissioning authority, usually the Secretary of State, and the obligee acts on that notice — the clock is running at the regulator before it is running with you. |
| Term end | The date on the bond | Past this the licence or authority behind the bond is exposed. |
| Reinstatement | After lapse | Generally not a late renewal but a new filing: new bond, new application, penalties, and a rate that reflects the lapse. Budget weeks, not days. |
What a lapse costs
The commission cannot be renewed without a current bond on file, and an expired commission means every notarial act performed after the expiry date is exposed. For notaries who notarise as part of a lender, title or dealership job, that is a compliance problem for the employer as well as the notary.
What varies by state
State statute sets whether a bond is required at all, the amount, and the commission term the bond has to match. The mechanics above come from the bond instrument and hold everywhere; the figures come from your state and we do not print them here, because a wrong number in this area costs somebody a licence. Confirm them with the state commissioning authority, usually the Secretary of State and with the surety that wrote the bond.
